On Friday, June 6th, we celebrated the Annual Salad Party for Grades Kindergarten, 4th, and 5th (our last @Lunch of the school year)! Salad Parties give our students the Taster-tunity (that means Opportunity to Taste) the foods they grew, which were ready to harvest! Our amazing volunteers served the students while giving food facts, teaching about the health benefits of each of these fantastic foods that we grew! We then played trivia to review the food facts that we just learned!
Kids also signed a “TASTED IT” poster. Below are photos of this fun day eating and learning about healthy whole foods! This Spring, we grew leafy greens, like lettuce and kale. We also provided some store bought veggies for those foods which were not ready to harvest quite yet (carrots, snow peas, radishes, and tomatoes). We also offered ranch and olive garden dressing to entice even more! Ya’ll have some lettuce-loving kids! We were all very excited! We really try to drive-home the importance of eating (or at least trying!) foods with nutrients for overall health of the body and mind! Ask your child what they tried and hopefully this experience will be a new whole food to add to their diet.

We also started a craft like this, featuring the colors, which represent various nutrients found in fruits and veggies. This dovetails a lesson we reviewed during the TFES Garden Club’s Winter Assembly for the whole school.

Congratulations to our 5th Graders. You will be missed dearly at TFES! It was an honor to grow with you! Please stay tuned for volunteer opportunities for middle/high schooler students.
